Florida Memorial blows out Edward Waters in Game 6 of Tyson Foods Black College World Series

MAY 12 | MONTGOMERY, AL

The bats came alive for top-seeded Florida Memorial as the Lions scored 14 runs between the 3rd and 6th innings to run away with a 14-1 victory over Edward Waters in the NAIA Bracket Semifinals of the 2022 Tyson Foods Black College World Series.

Juan Raul Hernandez gave up a first-inning run to Edward Waters, but settled in nicely for Florida Memorial from there, allowing just the one run on three hits while striking out four in what became a seven-inning complete game.

Edward Waters’ Keilin Washington led off the game with a double to right field and immediately got the ball rolling for the Tigers. He advanced to third on a ground out and then came in to score when Daquarius Thompkins singled down the left field line. Hernandez retired the next two hitters, but Edward Waters led 1-0 early.

The Tigers’ starting pitcher, Anthony Bayyat, was dealing for the first two innings, but Florida Memorial seemed to have figured out the hurler in the bottom of the third inning. The Lions started the inning with the first two batters reaching base, Nathan Harris with a lead-off walk and Rohandry Javier singling. The pair advanced to second and third after a wild pitch and then Harris came in to score as Bayyat balked during the next at bat. Florida Memorial took advantage of a seemingly rattled Bayyat and quickly broke the tie. Ulises Rodriguez singled to bring in Javier, then Jalen Young tripled to bring in Rodriguez and make it a 3-1 game. The next batter, Axel Gomez flew out to left field but it was deep enough for the sacrifice fly to bring in Young and extend the lead to three.

Edward Waters had one baserunner in each of the next two innings, but Florida Memorial maintained their three-run lead heading to the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Lions scored six runs in that inning, with all six coming with two outs.

A Young double got the two-out rally started and was quickly followed by a Gomez two-run home run. Sanchez reached on an error and Ruiz was hit by a pitch, putting a pair of runners on base. After a double steal moved the runners into scoring position, Fernando Vila singled to center field and brought both runners home.

A pitching change by the Tigers did not slow down the Lions attack. Florida Memorial drew consecutive walks to load the bases and then Javier was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in the fifth run of the inning. The sixth, and final, run scored in the inning came in on a wild pitch, making it a 10-1 game after five innings.

Florida Memorial retired the Edward Waters hitters in order in the top of the sixth inning, putting their offense right back in play. The Lions’ batters delivered, plating four more runs in the inning. All four runs came with two outs yet again. Gomez scored after Harris drew a bases-loaded walk, then a pair of singles from Javier and Rodriguez resulted in another three runs, extending Florida Memorial’s lead to 14-1.

The run rule was put into play after the sixth inning and after Edward Waters could not push across a single run in the top of the seventh inning, the game became final with Florida Memorial winning 14-1.

Florida Memorial advances to the NAIA bracket finals, which is scheduled to be played tomorrow, May 13th at 8:00 CDT. Florida Memorial will play the team that advances out of the loser’s bracket, which will either be Edward Waters or the winner of tonight’s elimination game between Talladega and Rust.
