Edward Waters Holds Off Rust

MAY 13, 2022 | MONTGOMERY, AL

No. 2 Edward Waters scored runs in each of the first five innings of this afternoon’s game and defeated No. 3 Rust College for the second time in three days to eliminate Rust from the 2022 Tyson Foods Black College World Series.

Edward Waters advances out of the NAIA loser’s bracket and will take on top-seeded Florida Memorial in tonight’s NAIA bracket finals.

Keilin Washington led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and then scored on a wild pitch to give Edward Waters the early 1-0 lead.

Rust came back in the top of the second inning to score three runs to take a 3-1 lead. After an inning-opening strikeout, the Bearcats had four-straight batters reach base, the last two singles from Strickland and Burton resulting in two runs coming in. Then with two outs, Callaway hit an RBI single to make it 3-1.

Their lead was short-lived, however, as Edward Waters used some aggressive base-running to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning. The Tigers drew back-to-back, one-out walks to put Hutchinson on second and Montes on first. The duo successfully executed a double steal to move into scoring position, and with the next batter, Laro, hitting a sacrifice fly, that double steal proved to be vital. Nobles stepped up and hit a two-out double to bring in Montes and tie the game at 3-3 heading into the third inning.

Rust had an opportunity to immediately break that tie, but the Bearcats left two runners on base in the top half of the third inning and the score remained 3-3. That is, until the bottom half of the inning when Edward Waters capitalized on their chances.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out, but they squandered their first crack at it with Roman grounding into a fielder’s choice which saw Rust get the lead runner out at home. With the bases still loaded, Montes came through with a two-run single, scoring both Garcia and Shubert to make it a 5-3 game in favor of Edward Rust. The Tigers added an additional run in the bottom of the fourth inning, taking advantage of a Nobles double to lead off the inning to make it 6-3. Nobles moved to third and then scored on a pair of groundouts as his heads-up baserunning aided in getting Edward Waters another run on the board.

Rust strung together a two-out rally in the top of the fifth inning with back-to-back hits, a single by Thomas then a double by Robinson, cut the score to 6-4.

Edward Waters’ lead was pushed back to three just a short while later as the Tigers capitalized on a pair of throwing errors to plate their seventh run of the game.

The Bearcats cut into their deficit yet again with Hubbard scoring on a Bonner groundout in the top of the seventh inning to trim it to 7-5. But they couldn’t follow that with additional runs in the eighth inning, leaving just one more attempt to claw back into the game.

That task became a bit more difficult with the Tigers scoring once in the bottom of the eighth, making it an 8-5 game with only the ninth inning to play. It was Edward Rust’s Thompkins hitting a sacrifice fly to bring in Washington for the insurance run.

Rust was looking to come back and tie or take the lead, but Grimaldi, on to close out the game for Edward Waters, set down the lineup in order to seal the Tigers’ victory.
