Delaware State Forces If Game in MEAC Baseball

The Delaware State Hornets took an early lead against the Coppin State Eagles in the first championship game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Baseball Tournament and held on to win 4-3.  The win by the Hornets forced a winner-take-all "if necessary game" to determine the MEAC baseball champion and the winner of the akutomatic bid to the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament.

Delaware State got on the scoreboard first, without the benefit of a hit, in the 2nd inning when Alan Alsonso was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After stealing 2nd, Alec Rodriquez advanced Alonso to 3rd on a groundout to first base.  Robert Trujillo got the RBI via his groundout to shortstop.  


Delaware State Added a run in the 4th inning.  This time an error by the Eagles opened the door for the Hornets.  Krew Bouldin reach on a error to open the inning.  After an Alonso walk, Trujillo singled up the middle for his second RBI of the day.

Coppin State cut the lead in half in the bottom half of the same inning.  Sebastian Sarabia doubled to right center with 2 outs.  Marcos Castillo reached on an error and Sarabia advanced to 3rd.  A second error in the inning allowed Sarabia to score on Corey Miley's plate appearance.  But the Eagles were unable to capitalize any further on the Hornets mistakes, as they left 2 on base in the frame.

Delaware State rebounded in the Top of the 5th inning to make up fo the mistakes of the previous inning by tacking on 2 runs.  Jordan King doubled to lead off the inning.  After being sacrificed to 3rd, King scored on Miguel Rivera's RBI double.  River advanced to 3rd on a throwing error and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Trey Paige.


Coppin State would score two runs of thier own in the 6th when Marcos Castillo walked with 2 outs and Miley hit a double to drive Castillo in.  Mike Dorcean singled to score Castillo to end the scoring by both teams.


Evan Harris went the distance for Delaware State to get the victory, giving up 2 earned runs and striking out 11, while walking 3.  Delaware State as a team committed 3 errors.  Marcos Herrand suffered the loss, giving up all 4 runs (2 earned), striking out 3 and walking 4.  Coppin State as a team committed 2 errors. 


Delaware State is attempting to become only the 3rd team in MEAC Baseball Tournament history to win the Championship from the loser's bracket.  The only other occurrences of teams claiming the title from the loser's bracket were both by Florida A&M University, in 1992 and 2019.  The Winner-Take-All game will occur at 3:30 p.m. today.
