BCSN Releases Its Initial Football Ranking of 2022

September 26, 2022 | Atlanta, GA
A.D. Drew, Black College Sports Network

On the Sunday night edition of the BCSN SportsWrap, with Bryan Fulford and A.D. Drew, the Black College Sports Network released its initial football Top 5 ranking of the 2022 Black College Football Season.  In their Division I ranking, the Southwestern Athletic Conference dominate the Top 5, claiming four of the five spots, and two of the three "in the hunt" positions.  Jackson State sits at the top of the ranking, followed by North Carolina Central, Prairie View A&M, Alcorn State, and Florida A&M.  In the Non-Division I ranking, three of the five ranked teams are undefeated, with an additional undefeated team, sitting "in the hunt".  Virginia Union, Albany State, Virginia State, Fort Valley State, and Benedict sit atop this division.

Division I Power Rankings

An undefeated Jackson State has dominated HBCU football on the field and sit atop the BCSN rankings.  The Tigers have scored 50 of more points in three of their four games this season.  The undefeated North Carolina Central Eagles, with a season-opening victory over rival, North Carolina A&T and a victory over, then #25, New Hampshire, trail Jackson State in the ranking.  A host of 2-2 teams round out the Top.  Prairie View A&M and Alcorn State are separated by less than two points, with the Braves being slightly penalized for its poor performance against FBS Tulane.  Florida A&M, based on their strong performance versus FBS North Carolina, fill the final spot in the ranking.

Non-Division I

Virginia Union's, on the strength of two impressive road victories over Valdosta State and Fayetteville State, are the top ranked Non-Division I team.  Albany State, despite one loss, is the number two team.  The Golden Rams have two victories against the Gulf South Conference, along with an SIAC conference victory against Clark-Atlanta.  Their lone loss is to FCS Florida A&M, a playoff team from a year ago.  Virginia State opened the season with a loss to Lenoir-Rhyne, a DII playoff team last season, before winning their next three games.  Fort Valley State and Benedict, despite their undefeated records, were hurt by their poor strength of schedule.  The Wildcats and Tigers strength of schedule were calculated to be the bottom five of HBCUs by the BCSN algorithm.  The Langston Lion, who are on the outside looking in, had the poorest strength of schedule for Non-Division I HBCU programs.

About the Ranking

The BCSN Computer Power Rankings is an algorithm, created by the Black College Sports Network, that assigns value to each teams' record, strength of schedule, road or neutral site victories, and power rating.  The Computer Power Rankings are released after four weeks of play so that enough data may be collected.  The Black College Sports Network released its first Computer Power Rankings in 2018.
