BCSN COACH OF THE YEAR
Congratulations to coaches Charmaine Wilson, Trelanne Powell, Tomekia Reed, John Teasley, Fred Watson, and Byron Smith who were selected at the BCSN’s Women and Men’s Basketball Coaches of the Year during the 2020-21 season. Each coach navigated their teams and programs through a global pandemic, where the uncertainty and challenges of scheduling and playing games was a week-to-week, and often day-to-day, battle. We commend each of them for helping their teams through this season safely and playing with the spirit of champions.
Charmaine Wilson, Edward Waters College
Coach Wilson completed her 10th season as head coach at EWC. She was recognized as the GCAC Coach of the Year in 2021 for the first time. The Lady Tigers were 13-5 this past season, won a share of the regular season for the first time in school history and appeared in the tournament championship game for the third time in the last four years. Coach Wilson has a career record 171-110 (.608)
Trelanne Powell, Tuskegee University
Coach Powell completed her 4th season as head coach of the Lady Golden Tigers. Her team went 12-2 and earned an at-large bid to the Division-II playoffs. Tuskegee finished conference runner-up in 2020 and two seasons ago (2018-19) she achieved the school's best record in 19 years, finishing with a 20-6 overall mark, the program's first 20-win season since 2000. Tuskegee also advanced to the semi-finals of the conference tournament and ended the year with a 13-3 league record.
Tomekia Reed, Jackson State University
Coach Reed completed her 3rd season at JSU with back-to-back regular season championships, consecutive conference tournament appearances, including a win in dramatic fashion this year. Reed has amassed a 42-9 conference record in her three seasons. This year, the Tigers finished 18-6 after a 19-10 season last year was cut short due to the COVID pandemic. JSU has a 19 game home winning streak dating back to Nov 21, 2019.
John Teasley, Stillman College
Stillman went 17-4, won the SSAC West Division and advanced to the Rd. of 16 in the NAIA National tournament. Since taking over the Stillman College men's basketball program in June 2017, Coach Teasley has produced four-straight NAIA national tournament appearances. Teasley went 91-25 in these past four years - the .784 win percentage is the best among NAIA HBCU programs during that span.
Fred Watson, Miles College
Coach Watson finished his 3rd season at Miles with a 10-1 record. The only loss was to rival Tuskegee by 1 point. Miles did not earn a berth into NCAA playoffs despite their record. In two previous seasons, he has produced the highest winning percentage in school history (45-13, .776) with a slew of individual and team accomplishments never seen before at Miles. During the 2019-20 season, Miles won the regular season and tournament championships in the SIAC, which resulted in an automatic berth in the NCAA Division II South Region postseason tournament. The Golden Bears finished 24-4 overall, 16-3 in the SIAC, but could not compete due to the COVID pandemic.
Byron Smith, Prairie View A&M University
Coach Smith recently received the Hugh Durham Award from CollegeInsider.com, which is awarded annually to the nation's top mid-major coach in Division I basketball. He was also recognized for the third-straight season as the SWAC Coach of the Year. Smith has established himself among the country's elite coaches. This past season, he led the Panthers to a third-straight SWAC regular-season title and an undefeated record in league play. The 2020-21 Panthers posted a 16-5 record and were ranked No. 25 in the final regular-season Mid-Major Top 25®
